Based loosely on the story of the five Bulgarian medics who were wrongly imprisoned in Libya from 1999-2007 for allegedly infecting children with HIV, and the personal journey of a young Eastern European woman living in the west. Native Birds uses elements of Bulgarian folklore through simple actions, text and video in a space filled with a thousand origami birds to examine what it is to be free.
Native Birds was created in part at The Watermill, a laboratory for performance 2009.

This intervention work will be integrated into the Tasty dining experience, involving itself intimately in the diner’s personal space, rather than providing the usual gap between artwork and audience. Playing with the idea of a high-pressured dining experience, and wondering aloud why anyone would enter into this most complicated social interaction, beset with complex etiquette and rules, all in the name of relaxed informality.

Hair conditioning. The dog. We salivate. The sick woman denies the real value of it all. As the Titanic sails by, the laughing mouths promise us bigger and better. Underneath scribbled out is the text,
“Hello very happy that I can draw for you and we start acquaintance. Please come I’m waiting my stranger”

Taking the form of a one to one encounter the work seeks to question our attitudes to familiarity and intimacy. An attempt to enliven the past, by re-living, re-telling, recording and reunion. It is about slight yet intimate encounters and attempts to be one itself.
Most of all claim to fame is an excuse to meet people so if you have ever passed David Hasselhoff in the street, why not add your story to the claim to fame collection.

Hi Fidelity Hi is a performance based on interviews with record collectors and personal anecdotes and memories associated with the artist’s own record collection. Sometimes the idea of collecting is seen as a lonely activity. Playing records can be a private thing, confined to one’s bedroom or permanently plugged into a personal stereo or ipod, shut off from what’s around you. But playing records is also about sharing, about spreading the word, breaking down barriers and having a good dance.
